Toltec Dreaming Practice: Preparation Exercise

How does one learn to Toltec Dream? Dreaming = Meditation with Awareness

Let’s start with learning to Dream, Toltec style. Toltec Master and the author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Toltec Wisdom, Sheri Rosenthal defines Toltec Wisdom as:

“a technique that enables us to change our ordinary dream of nonawareness

into one of awareness by the purposeful use of our attention.”

Previously our dream of nonawareness was constructed by the circumstances into which we were born such as our family of origin. Dreaming has also been defined as Meditation with Awareness and it begins with learning preparing yourself for Dreaming. Here is the formula to begin:

1. Get Comfortable.

Find a comfortable chair, and designate it your Dreaming Chair. Do your best to sit in the same chair, in the same place and at the same time every day. In this way you condition your body to Dream which will speed the process. I like to sit in a zero gravity chair such as Lafuma Chair. I can sit upright with my hands on the armrests or lie back in the chair with my feet up. We can also sit cross-legged on the floor or pillow, or with knees bent arms wrapped around them, and head resting on our knees. Being comfortable is the key, and as

you practice, you will find the way to your personal comfort.

2. Breathe

Once you are comfortable start your Dreaming session by focusing on your breath. Breathe in and expand your belly. Breathe out and allow your belly to collapse. Continue to breathe in and out and focus on your breath. Go at your own pace and intend to slow and deepen your breath. Your mind can only focus on one thing at a time, so when you focus on your breath you automatically stop focusing on your thoughts. Start by doing this practice from 10-20 minutes a day. Should you lose the focus on your breath, once you realize it, return to the focus on your breath.

Once you are comfortable with this process, you are ready for the next step which is to practice enter into Dreaming. I recommend you practice this Dreaming/ Breathing/ Relaxation technique every day till the next blog post. Intend to practice every day. If you skip days, just go back and begin again. Don’t judge yourself for being inconsistent. And certainly don’t judge yourself for doing it wrong. There is no wrong. There is only love for yourself and respect for doing your best. And Practice, practice, practice.
